Trip to Galena, Illinois

It has been a while since we took a trip anywhere. We decided to ease into it by taking a more relaxed trip, within a few hours driving, to Galena! We went for a couple of nights right before Thanksgiving, which was perfect!

Galena is a pretty small, hallmark town that usually attracts many visitors a year; because of the holiday, it was not nearly as packed as it usually gets.

Hotel

We stayed at the historic DeSoto House Hotel, which was very pleasant. Our package included breakfast vouchers for each morning (which were delicious…but more on that later) and we were pleased to find out we each received 2 drink tokens as well! The hotel was right on main street, so it was very easy to walk around and come back when we got tired of walking/hiking.

Food

We tried a few different things throughout the town, which were in general, all great! Breakfast, we mostly had at the hotel (because of the vouchers). We had dinner in the hotel’s restaurant the first night which was fantastic. Perfectly cooked filet mignon and delicious potatoes! Another special callout is a burger I had in the town right before Galena, Elizabethtown (15 min drive) on the way there – very very good.

Nature

There are a couple of trails pretty nearby which seemed pretty easy and great. Along one of those trails, there is plenty of history (there is plenty of history throughout the town, but there were many monuments here).

Shopping

The next big thing to do is mostly walk around Main street and shop around. Tons of interesting shops, wine, cheese, local artistry stuff. Coming in late November means it gets dark really quick (and shops close up pretty early too), but we caught them in transitioning over to Christmas decorations, which was nice.

Final Thoughts

There were plenty of things we didn’t get to do, which is ok because we definitely want to come back. Even though it’s a small town, there are always plenty of things going on. The only thing I noticed is the coffee scene is….not great. Additionally, of the 3 – 4 coffee shops I went to, 0 of them did any latte art… 🙁

I also used this opportunity to play around with the new drone! So here is a small video of a couple of different things I was messing with, plus, a pretty awesome view of Galena!
