It was my turn to pick for December and I went with the Victorian tradition of reading some ghost stories during Christmas and choosing a couple of short stories from well known authors in the horror genre. The first pick was Shirley Jackson’s A Visit (The Lovely House).
It’s a short 80 page book but very well crafted. I would argue that the story is not necessarily….in the realm of horror but perhaps horror adjacent with a definite creep factor. The story of course, as is the case with most books of this genre (and probably of Shirley Jackson), peaks towards the end with a revelation of giving the readers a less subtle clue about what really may be going on in this creepy house with all of the seemingly normal characters.
Overall, great (and very short) read! Great story and even better prose! Very much recommend.
